Operative Director

Role

A key strategic role that involves supporting the Managing Director in respect of business strategy, planning and new business development. They are responsible for operational efficiency, managing costs, driving up profitability and delivering a quality service to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop and implement strategy for operational management and development
  • Establish and maintain appropriate systems for measuring performance
  • Overview of customer enquiries, administrative paperwork and all processes
  • Monitor stock levels and measure and report on operational issues
  • Manage and develop direct reporting staff to develop the capabilities of the team
  • Ensure all managers and supervisors understand all necessary aspects and needs of operational development
  • Ensure that all financial targets are met with regards to any capital expenditure and particularly revenue cost control
  • Contribute to the evaluation and development of operational strategy and performance in co-operation with the Managing Director and where applicable, the Shareholders
  • Ensure activities meet with and integrate with requirements for health and safety, legal stipulations, environmental policies and the general duty of care
  • Manage vehicles and drivers in line with the FORS standards.

Typical day

Liaising with clients and the design engineer to ensure accurate and timely completion of technical drawings. Occasional site surveys may be required dependent on experience and the scope of the role within the company.

Key skills

Organised, analytical, excellent communication skills, strategic thinking, strong negotiating, problem solving and leadership skills. Basic computer knowledge in programs like Microsoft is essential and some employers may require experience with industry specific programs.

Expected salary

The salary range is vast and can be anything from £36,000 to £94,000.

Qualifications required

Project management qualifications (e.g. Prince 2) can be useful as can Bachelor’s Degrees in Business, Finance, Management and/or Economics. However, there is no substitute for experience and lots of Operations Directors have progressed in to the role from being Charge Hands or Scaffolding Operatives.
